My Hero
Homer Bailey: Great Great Grandson of Cyrus Harris.
Homer Bailey: Son of Monroe and Cora Bailey.
Homer Bailey: Brother of Cecil and Donald Bailey
Homer Bailey: My Uncle

For my Dad, Uncle Donald, Grandmother, Grandfather and most of all for Uncle Homer. For the man that never got to play with me, hold me, or tell me stories.

Homer Raymond Bailey, 6957268, Pfc USA Army. Homer served 4 years in the Pacific Theater of War and participated in the battle of Corregidor. Wounded May 2, 1942, and captured by Japs on Corregidor May 7, 1942. He was held in POW Camp 10-A and died in Jap Prison Camp, Puerta Princess, Palawan, P.I. on Dec. 14, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Your story, your life, your death, your honor.....

Not having the opportunity to ever know Uncle Homer and only having these pictures as a glimpse into his life. I look hard into his face and wonder what his dreams were for his life. His brothers went on to marry and have children and his life was cut short and dreams were never fulfilled.

His smile must of caught the heart of a few ladies, but knowing my Dad and Uncle Donald I bet you were shy and soft spoken. Grandpa Bailey was so good with his hands and such a hard worker, I know you must of picked up his traits and carried them with you.

You must of carried that Oklahoma twang in your speech, and the long walking stride that Dad and Uncle Donald had. Family values were strong and I know you kept all of them in your thoughts. I use to hear Grandma talking to you at the kitchen sink and it seemed to make her happy to hold thoses conversations with you. I know she missed her oldest son and I can only guess at her pain at not having you near.

The only thing I can do for you, my Dad, Uncle Donald and Grandparents, is keep your memory alive. I will teach my sons your story, share your life with others, and hold your honor close to my heart. The precious gift of your life for your country will always be held dear to my heart, always.

It was said to me you were a hero at Palawan and that I know is true, but I know you were a hero way before you arrived at Palawan. You were a hero to your brothers, a brother they always looked up to. A hero to your father for the man you had become. To your mother you were a loving son who she held close to her heart always. You were a hero to your family first and then to your country!

Rest in peace, rest in honor, rest with your buddies, we will not forget!
